Boston Pops unveils tribute to Kennedys

BOSTON - The Boston Pops is taking the wraps off a musical tribute to the Kennedys. The world premier of "The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers," is set for tonight at Symphony Hall.

Celebrity narrators Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris will read from some of the most famous speeches of President John F. Kennedy, and Sens. Robert and Edward Kennedy.

Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart commissioned composer Peter Boyer and lyricist Lynn Ahren to write the piece, which will be performed several other times this spring and during the Pops summer season at Tanglewood.

Boyer, who composed the Grammy-nominated "Ellis Island: The Dream of America," calls himself a great admirer of the Kennedys and says he visited the brothers' graves at Arlington National Cemetery to gain inspiration for the work.

IT’S BEEN 47 YEARS SINCE DEALEY PLAZA…AND WE STILL LONG FOR CLOSURE - TheCypressTimes

By Chuck Helppie

The news of John F. Kennedy’s assassination was so shocking, so unexpected that it generated a gasp heard ‘round the world. People simply stopped breathing for a second. If you lived through it, you know what I mean. If you didn’t, ask your parents or grandparents. They will tell you precisely what they were doing and how they felt when they heard the news.

The overwhelming quest for closure continues to this day. We are still searching for answers. Over two million visitors – from all over the world – make a solemn pilgrimage to the grassy knoll in Dealey Plaza each year. Most come to see what they have only read about or seen on film. Others come because they feel it is sacred ground.

Photo of Senator John Kennedy in Newark, NJ

From Yvonne Freeman:

My grandfather took this photo of John F. Kennedy campaigning for President in Newark, NJ.  My grandfather was a Polish  immigrant who fled the Bolsheviks during World War II - he was proud
to become a citizen of the United States, and much like the British royalty, he had a strong affinity for the Kennedy family.  We found this picture in his things over 10 years after he passed away.  We
cherish the memory and hope people enjoy the photo as much as I'm sure my grandfather did.

Thank you for sharing the family photo.

Pete Hamill's Eyewitness Account of Robert Kennedy's Assassination - New York News - Runnin' Scared

June 13, 1968, Vol. XIII, No. 35

Two Minutes to Midnight: The Very Last Hurrah
by Pete Hamill

LOS ANGELES -- It was, of course, two minutes to midnight an the Embassy Room of the Ambassador Hotel was rowdy with triumph. Red and blue balloons drifted up through three golden chandeliers to bump against a gilded ceiling. Young girls with plastic Kennedy boaters chanted like some lost reedy chorus from an old Ray Charles record. The crowd was squashed against the bandstand, a smear of black faces and Mexican-American faces and bearded faces and Beverly Hills faces crowned with purple hair. Eleven tv cameras were turning, their bright blue arclights changing the crowd into a sweaty stew. Up on the bandstand, with his wife standing just behind him, was Robert Kennedy.

Sue Vogelsinger first learned of her boss’s death while reviewing one of his upcoming speeches. The place was Dallas. The date was Nov. 22, 1963. Her boss was President John F. Kennedy. “My colleague, Chris Camp, and I were working on speech copy for the next stop. We were on Air Force One in (Kennedy’s) cabin when one of the stewards came through and said to pack up,” said Vogelsinger, a Sagle, Idaho, resident who served as a member of Kennedy’s press staff. Decades later Vogelsinger smiles as she remembers the man she calls physically awe-inspiring, quick-witted and a man who truly loved his job. “Being around President Kennedy was exhilarating,” said Vogelsinger/Patty Hutchens, SR Handle Extra.
